Even though we penguins do crave that occasional midnight snack, or a munchie every now and then, we stay far away from the water in the early morning, in the still of the evening, and even at night.
Yes, it is very tempting to take the plunge and grab some krill, a small fish or two but as hungry as we might get it is an unwritten rule to refrain. Here’s why.
As a matter of fact everyone gets hungry and likes to snack. I’ll bet even you like to have a tasty treat every now and then, just before bedtime. Orca whales love to snack. And since they are really huge they tend to think of penguins as a snack. But it doesn’t stop there because Leopard Seals think of us penguins as a darn tasty snack too.
Fortunately after loosing my Uncle Gus to an Orca whale at sunset, the colony got together to see what we could do about. Everyone at the colony had some knowledge of a friend or relative that never returned from the sea. It turned out that they went for a snack at sunset, sun rise or at night.
What my Private Eye mind came up with is that those are the times when the big animals and fish eat. So we came up with a plan and now no one goes in the water at the forbidden times.
Consequently we have not lost one single baby penguin this season and every one is quite happy about that. The leopard seals and orca whales are equally disgruntled but we thought it only fair. After penguins do not eat them, so why should we let them eat us.
